Don't leave it too late!!

People often leave it late to MOT their vehicles due to a combination of simple forgetfulness, financial constraints, and misconceptions about the legal requirements. Studies show that over a quarter of drivers book their MOT late, with roughly 1.4 million drivers delaying due to the fear of repair costs.

Many drivers are unaware that you can actually MOT your vehicle up to one month (minus one day) before the current certificate expires while still preserving your original renewal date. For example, if your MOT expires on 15 May, you can have it tested as early as 16 April and your new certificate will still be valid until 15 May the following year—effectively giving you a 13-month MOT.

Risks of Leaving it Late!!

Legal & Financial Penalties: Driving without a valid MOT canlead to a fine of up to £1,000. If the vehicle is found to be in a "dangerous" condition, this can rise to £2,500, plus penalty points or a driving ban.

Invalidated Insurance: Most insurance policies are invalidated if the vehicle does not have a current MOT, meaning you may not be covered in the event of an accident.

Repair Delays: If you test at the last minute and fail, you may be unable to drive the car legally while waiting for parts or a repair slot at the garage.

To avoid these issues, you can sign up for official MOT reminders through the GOV.UK website.
